GREETINGS from the directorThe season has started and we have sunshine and excellent skiing conditions. The Alpine Mini World Cup group is the largest we have ever had and Brad Jacobson and his coaches have done an excellent job in getting the season started. The Alpine Mitey Mite and Cross Country Youth Development programs start soon and conditions could not be better. Some of our full time Alpine athletes have been traveling on the Western Region FIS circuit. Kevin Francis skied to a Super G 4th place at Jackson Hole and 3rd place GS at Winter Park. Gretchen Glaser placed 2nd and 7th in two Super G's at Breckenridge. The Cross Country racing season started with the Skyliner Open at Mt. Bachelor, December 16 & 17. Toby Bayard and Pam Stevenson, our new Co-Race Directors, did a fantastic job ordering the right snow conditions and organizing their first race. Ben Husaby will be taking the older Cross Country athletes on the road for the JO qualifiers starting in January. The athletes have all been working very hard and are ready for these events. We are all saddened by the sudden death of Sharon Nofziger, our Cross Country Race Volunteer Coordinator for many years. She played a major role in making our race organization one of the best in the US. There has been a Cross Country Youth Scholarship established in her name. Tax deduction donations can be made to MBSEF. Everyone who attended this year's successful Snowball has helped with the support of our athletes. The results we are seeing now would not be possible without the support we have received from many supporters. Eloise Stevenson has supported our Foundation over the years and this year's Snowball bidding was an example of her passion for our program. Thank you Eloise. See you all skiing soon, Russ Read

CROSS COUNTRY ATHLETE PROFILEHighlighting Kira Folden, J1
(By Chris Wolski, Cross Country Junior Coach)Redmond High Junior, Kira Folden, wasn't even on a pair of cross country skis two years ago. Pretty amazing when you consider this seasoned MBSEF alpine racer is now able to set goals in qualifying for the Nordic Junior Olympics. Awarded the MBSEF most-improved nordic athlete of last season, Kira admits transitioning to nordic skiing was a challenge, but she prides herself as a hard worker. She is known to her coaches and teammates as an athlete who pairs a fun attitude with serious self-discipline. If this season is anything like last when she improved her JO qualifying results by fifty percent, Kira should be well on her way to achieving her goals. Kira's grandparents, who have always been supportive of her skiing pursuits, were the first to bring her to the slopes of Mt. Bachelor, but it wasn't until a local high school coach suggested she switch to nordic that she made the transition and has never looked back. Kira is well aware of the improvements she has made. "Last year I was always behind at practice," she said, speaking of her training with other kids, many of whom had been nordic skiing since they could walk. She found the team very supportive though, and the friendships she made were very conducive to a positive, learning environment. "This year," she says, "I'm skiing right along with everyone else." Off the trails, Kira can often be spotted lunching at the Taco Stand, selling clothes at Old Navy, playing tennis, or working with kids at the community daycare center as part of the leadership organization she is involved with at Redmond High. The lifestyle of a nordic ski racer is one she has grown to enjoy as a complement to the rest of her pursuits. While Kira is a very self-motivated girl, it means a lot to her to be supported by family members, chiefly her Aunt Erica, who is her number one fan at local races. Another important part of what Kira loves about skiing is the same thing any sixteen year old loves about life; being able to spend time with her friends. In many ways, the shared experience of ski racing has formed these friendships deeper for Kira. One of the best experiences Kira feels she has received from the MBSEF program is the opportunity to travel across the Northwest to races with her teammates, who she feels are friends and who are very much responsible for her love of the sport.
